Congratulations to Maya Hlava, a North Shore native and Wilmette Park District theatre program alumnus, on her very first television appearance! She appeared in an episode of NBC’s Chicago Med, which aired on April 3. The episode had Maya in a dramatic role as a young teen struggling with pregnancy complications.

The road to achieve this role in the popular show required many auditions, callbacks and trips to Los Angeles. But her dedication paid off last week when season 4’s episode 18, Tell Me the Truth, aired.

Maya’s mother, Wendy Avon, has been a theatre program instructor at the park district for many years and recounts how her daughter first fell in love with acting in a park district production of Charlotte’s Web back when she was 4 years old. “She did numerous shows and classes at the park district and then got cast in her first professional show when she was in 4th grade,” she explains.

Since her start at the Wilmette Park District, the 15-year-old Evanston Township High School student has an impressive resume of experience having been in several professional shows at Steppenwolf, Drury Lane, Marriott Theatre, Griffin Theatre, Steep Theatre, Writer’s Theatre and A Red Orchid.

“She plans to keep auditioning and hopes that she will continue to work moving forward,” says Avon. We are extremely proud to see how far Maya has come in her acting career, and we excited to see what the future holds for her.

She is currently rehearsing for a show opening at A Red Orchid next month called, The Killing Game.
