III. Communications and Correspondence
Commissioner Crowley acknowledged emails from Pat McCann, Noel Jackson, and David Kritzler regarding the golf course and their concerns which will be duly noted.
IV. Recognition of Visitors
Commissioner Crowley acknowledged the following visitors: Fred Watson, Chris Delaney, Rich Alexander, Bill Lemieux, Tim Terchek, Dan Longfellow, Dick Ciccone, David Kritzler, Frank Mathie.
David Kritzler, 1733 Lake Avenue, Wilmette commented on the golf course concerns with the design or during the construction process with some of the greens. He would like to see some of the greens modified as outlined in his letter under communication and correspondence.
Commissioner Crowley stated that the Committee received three letters which highlighted on some of the same concerns. He stated that there are two things that he seeks input on: 1) if we tear up a green, two greens or four greens it would take these greens out of play less than a year it has been back in play. How would the users feel if we were to do anything at this time; and 2) the other is the cost associated with it, a budget that has not accommodated this input at this point. Mr. Kritzler commented that the one real issue for now is with #17 where the ball runs off the back. Commissioner Crowley stated that Staff will look into these issues and come back to the Committee with some options and recommendations.
Dan Longfellow, 1511 Central, Wilmette commented that he agreed with virtually everything Mr. Kritzler stated and added that he heard players commenting to Staff after playing the course that they will never come play it again. He stated he understands that the golf course is new and it was not going to be perfect. He stated that we may have irritated a lot of players who may not come back. He recommended some signage being placed on greens.
V. Manager Reports
Mike Matchen (Golf General Manager/Golf Supt.) reported on the following:
- The three letters referred to under communication and correspondence all highlighted on some of the same issues with the golf course and will be taken very seriously and addressed aggressively. Superintendent Bowen clarified that the greens starting growing in May and the golf course opened in July which does not permit a lot of time for growth. Mike Matchen outlined and discussed in details the golf course and what it will entail to keep moving forward. Mike Matchen discussed the safety netting set up with specifics. Commissioner Wolfe asked Staff if they could let golfers know on the day that they golf what areas of golf may be affected. Mike Matched stated that he would communicate in advance of play. He also stated he would rope off areas and use signage to help.
- The fairways and areas that need fixing were discussed in detail during the slide presentation along with recommendations being made.
A Wilmette resident commented on the televisions being 2004 technology. He suggested two years ago replacing the TVs to benefit everyone that uses the facility. Commissioner Crowley stated his comment was duly noted.
VI. Unfinished Business
Commissioner Wolfe asked about marketing ideas for the golf course and what actions have been outlined. Superintendent Bowen stated that Staff is working with the marketing department currently on a plan. He stated that memberships have been modified somewhat to accommodate more people with an unlimited weekday membership option. He will get back to Committee with marketing recommendations.
VII. New Business
- Adam Kwiatkoski discussed updating the current Outing policy. He stated the policy reflects more guidelines for outings at the golf course.
- The next meeting will be February 14, 2015.
