1) The meeting was called to order at 6:32 p.m.
2) The Committee approved the minutes of the May 9, 2011 Committee meeting by General Consent
3) Under Communications and Correspondence, Superintendent Bowen stated that the District received an email from Kathy Dodd, President of the Wilmette Women’s Tennis Association (WWTA), thanking the Committee for granting several of the group’s requests regarding the competitive play at Gillson Park. Superintendent Bowen explained that the group had originally requested that their non-resident opposing players be allowed to park on the overlook because the distance from the middle road or from Michigan Avenue was too great for the ladies to walk. The District made arrangements and offered to allow the non-residents to park in the beach parking lot and that the parking fee could be paid for by the WWTA. After much consideration, the WWTA felt that the parking fee for the non-residents was too high and had decided to not proceed with their original request.
4) Under Managers Reports, Darrell Smith reported that outdoor tennis reservations began on Memorial Day weekend as did outdoor maintenance of the courts. The maintenance staff has prepared the courts for play by replacing nets, blowing court surfaces and repairing or replacing other equipment when necessary.
Gillson courts are showing signs of wear and resurfacing should be considered in the near future.
Summer registration began May 3 for residents and non-resident registration was held the next day, May 4. Adult advanced drills began the week of June 6. All other classes and camps began the week of June 13th and will continue until August 5. Basic level class and camp registration is continuing.
Indoor rates for summer play are $40 per 1½ hours for adults and $21 per 1½ hours for juniors. Guest fees are not charged during the summer season. The 2011/2012 court time lottery was held on Saturday, April 23. The indoor 2011/12 reserved court season begins September 11 and continues to May 15, 2012. Staff expects to have close to the same amount of court rentals as last year.
The tennis camps sold out again for this summer and the junior “pirate” and multi-sport tennis/golf camps are once again the most popular. Commissioner Shelley stated that her children had a good time in Pirate camp today.
Terry Juliar reported that summer skating school forms are currently being submitted. Skaters had been encouraged to take advantage of a discount by purchasing ice time before it ends today. Marketing efforts were made to attract guest professionals from Skokie and Highland Park (both rinks are closed this summer) and positive feedback has been received from both groups.
Commissioner Brault suggested that staff develop a survey form to see if any of those in the Skokie league who are playing at the rink this summer would be interested in coming to Wilmette on a permanent basis. Superintendent Bowen stated staff would work on that this week.
Brian Udany reported that despite the cool weather and a few equipment challenges, the pool opened for the pre-season weekend on May 28. Memorial Day was a challenge because of the high temperatures and the beach being closed for water conditions which resulted in the largest crowd staff has seen in several years. Brian stated his staff did an incredible job and should be commended.
Commissioner Shelley stated she feels that too many people go to the pool and from what she has observed and heard from other residents is that the District should limit the number of passes sold so that the residents would be able to experience more of a club-like environment.
Commissioner Brault stated he has heard the same thing from residents and asked that staff perform an analysis to determine how much fees should be raised to reduce the demand for passes while keeping the overall revenue gain or loss neutral.
Superintendent Bowen stated that if there is an occupancy issue, staff has no other way to determine how many people are in the pools except to do a physical count. Currently, the computer system counts individuals going into the facility but it does not count individuals who leave the facility. He stated that the computerized turnstiles have never worked as they should since the facility was opened almost ten years ago. He also stated that staff would review the situation and report back to the Committee.
